Shown on this page, Rational Exponents, is a two screen snapshots of the content found in our eBook or print copy of HP Prime Guide Algebra Fundamentals. The snapshot will likely be a partial view, with previous content cut off from top and completion of a topic's explanation cut from the bottom. For additional coverage see the Table of Content of the HP Prime Guide to jump to the fourth Chapter, Explanation 1.4 - Radicals and Rational Exponents, Rational Exponents, shown below. Print user will need to turn to this page.

This section continues the Radicals and Properties. Working with radicals is an area where we prefer to simplify the radicals using manual techniques. In our HP Prime Guide Algebra Fundamentals we show additional HP Prime examples. The HOME view in the additional examples gives us an error when the index of the radical is even and the number inside the radical is negative where the CAS view gives us an imaginary solution.

The additional HP Prime examples illustrate that in CAS view simplification of radicals with a higher index results in solution displayed with rational exponents. Use of the soft key simplify is often required. In HOME view the same problem result will be a decimal equivalent.

The additional HP Prime examples illustrate that simplification of radicals - nth power removal results in absolute value for even index. The HP Prime also adds absolute value inside radicals as shown in the (b) part of the example shown next.

For all the above additional HP Prime examples manual solutions are easier. Go ahead at this point and follow directions for screenshot 1 in Content 1.

The next two screen shots in Content 1 show the relationship between radicals and rational exponents’

Remark: Content 1 part (b) solution is difficult ot follow. Illustrate why we recommend manual solutions for radicals. Content 2  spreadsheet illustrates how it can be used to help us identify constants inside radicals that can be simplified. Content 2 second screenshots again illustrate how manual solutions are a better technique for radicals and rational exponents.

When you finished with this section move on to another section or topic.
