Introduction to Absolute Value

Instructions

Shown on this page is the calculator's representation of the definition of absolute value plus a discussion of the distance of two point on a number line. Their are two screen snapshots of the content found in our eBook or print copy of HP Prime Guide Algebra Fundamentals. The snapshot will likely be a partial view, with previous content cut off from top and completion of a topic's explanation cut from the bottom. For additional coverage see the Table of Content of the HP Prime Guide to jump to the first Chapter, Explanation 1.1 - Introduction to Absolute Value. Print user will need to turn to this page as well. Move to the HP Family Absolute Value screen, shown below.

This section continues the Introduction to Absolute Value that discussion started with last paragraph of the previous section.

Read the section below. Follow the directions below the calculator's image shown below in HP Prime Guide Algebra Fundamentals - Content 1 and create the screen with your calculator or calculator app. Here we use the CAS view image of the calculator's screen.  For the first screen we recommend typing A, keyboard orange uppercase but shown on calculator as black lowercase, into the command line. If any have data is stored in the variable A, we will see its value otherwise we will see the variable by itself. If  the variable has previous data stored in it, use the toolbox soft key Catlg purge(A) function to erase the data.

Remark: The Absolute Value screen shows a great feature of CAS view. We can use it to display definitions. Shown in Content 1 is the Library Application screen for the handheld / Pro / Virual software. The latest version of the HP Prime’s has additional apps, combined apps, plus changes to apps. Be sure to be using latest version of your HP Prime. The HP Prime Lite / Free only has 9 of the Application Library apps. All the devices have the Solve app. See the HP Prime Guide Algebra Fundamentals to see the rest of the discussion of Solve app's use with absolute value. Content 2 section shows us using the CAS solve command. We prefer CAS solve command for the solution of the Solve app’s example, as it directly displays both solutions. With the Solve app we need to seed the Numeric View to see both solutopns. The CAS solve command is one of the most important commands that we use.

When you finished with this section move on to another section or topic.
